Donate to Help Cover Expenses for Ptah Dunbar

After returning from WordCamp San Francisco, Ptah Dunbar was involved in a near fatal accident on his motorcycle. In a head on collision with a cab, Ptah suffered extensive cuts, bruises and broken bones when he went somewhat ungracefully through the front and back window of the afore mentioned cab. Very lucky to be alive, after a week of hospitalization, Ptah faces a number of challenges.  He’s still without eyesight in his left eye which will require specialists, and is hoped to heal in time.

As a freelancer, Ptah was without insurance at the time of the accident. Aside from his hospitalization, his future involves many specialists and recovery time. He’s currently being cared for by family, who describe the situation as “immediate”. The eye specialist alone will be $1100.

As a valued member of our community, we’re hoping to provide immediately needed financial relief for Ptah to help him and his family with living expenses and medical expenses over the next few months, allowing him time to heal. So many members of the community are freelancers and understand the lifestyle of living without insurance, starting your own business and the relative expenses and how being unable to work suddenly, for a prolonged period, coupled with medical expenses might impact your life. It’s probably very frightening to not know when your life will return to normal or you’ll be able to provide for yourself again. Imagine what a relief we could provide by letting Ptah know he has a whole world of people who have his back.

Though a monetary donation is likely to be the most ideal way to contribute, you may also leave Ptah a message by commenting on this page. If you’re local to Miami, you might also consider dropping off dinner. Really, don’t be embarrassed to donate 5$, even 1$. The point is that as a community, we’ll come together for a cause and amount bigger than any of us individually. Above all, thank you.  (images courtesy of Austin Passy, Brad Williams & Ptah)

  1. Since the goal was met, if you’re still wanting to help and can’t send food etc, consider donating blood. As I found out a couple years ago, blood donations are very often low in the US, and if you have a rare blood type, it’s even worse. Thankfully we had the blood we needed, but not everyone is that lucky. Blood’s got a short shelf life too, so it’s pretty much always needed. Check at your local blood donation hobbit holes.

  2. I only read about your situation after the fund was temporarily closed ::: If you need any more assistance I’m sure many more of us will also contribute to your recovery ::: You have My Best Wishes, May you have a speedy Recovery

  3. Ptah, though we’ve only met in a few instances and have spoken briefly, (working with you and Mike, through J) I still want to send you my best wishes for a FULL recovery! The world needs an intelligent and colorful individual like you!!!
    Cheers man,
    Everything’s gonna be alright.

  4. Ptah, get well my friend. Although we have never met, your code has gotten me thru many projects and kept me company on many late nights. I’ve learned a lot from you and am glad you will be coding again soon. I donated blood today in your honor. In fact, I think I donated a little too much because I passed out after taking two steps. Good speed!
